Zowie Zinnia
The Zowie Zinnia is one of a kind with its bold, beautiful fire two-toned colors and it will illuminate your garden. A 2006 All-American Selections winner, this variety is highly recommended for containers, as well as in-ground because plants are heat and fairly drought tolerant. Zowie Zinnias have a 3-4" semi-double blooms with a plant height of 24-30". Zinnias are widely known for attracting beneficial pollinators that are very important for your garden. Great for the market gardener as a beautiful cut-flower! Zinnia elegans. 65-75 days to maturity.
Blooms will keep for several weeks with adequate water in a jar or vase. Zinnias can be direct-seeded or transplanted. Due to the papery texture of the seed and the oblong seed size, zinnias do not plant well with a walk-behind planter. As a result, direct seeding must be done by hand. To direct seed, create a small furrow in the soil and scatter the zinnia seed along the furrow. Use a garden rake to lightly cover the seed and pack the planted area. Zinnias grow well when planted on double rows with drip irrigation. Lay one row of drip tape and plant on both sides of the tape to maximize garden space.
They will also perform well when transplanted. They grow great in our heavy-duty seed-starting trays. Transplants are ready to go in the ground when plants can be easily pulled from the seed starting trays. Zinnias are very heat-tolerant and will continue to produce throughout the warm months of summer. To maximize production, prune or âdead-headâ plants to promote the development of new blooms.
